Franklin Heritage Trail Deactivation

The Ministry of Forest (MOF) has responded to our request to reconsider the road deactivation measures prescribed on the newly established trail. The MOF suggested the club acquire a License of Occupation (LOO) through the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. The MOF gave the club until January 31, 2025, to respond as the MOF would like to proceed with their deactivation measures which includes removing culverts and installing water drainage ditches across the road in place of the culverts.  The deactivation would start just after St. Anne’s Meadow Rec. Site (2km) to maintain public access to the Recreation Site.  As per info from the Forest Practices Board, deactivation is meant to block vehicle access, but not ATVs.  However, what we have seen is that these cross-ditches or water-bars installed in place of the culverts are made without consideration for the safety of ATV riders and create a hazard on the trails for the public.

It may be hard to understand why the MOF is so determined to remove their infrastructure and close this road to vehicles, but it most likely has to do with removing their liability from the active forest service road while reducing overall road density in the region, which has some of the highest FSR density in the province.

Trail Closure

Attention ATV riders in Christina Lake: The Italy Connector from Santa Rosa to Clarkson Road is closed through the private property at south end. Please respect the landowner while we work to resolve their concerns and re-establish a route.
