May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, a national campaign aimed at increasing awareness of motorcycle safety among both riders and other drivers. It is promoted by organizations like the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) to help reduce accidents and fatalities involving motorcycles.

Key Goals of Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month:

  1. Encouraging Motorists to Be Aware of Motorcycles
    • Look twice before changing lanes or making turns.
    • Give motorcycles extra space on the road.
    • Avoid distracted or impaired driving.
  2. Reminding Motorcyclists About Safe Riding Practices
    • Wear proper protective gear, including DOT-approved helmets.
    • Follow traffic laws and avoid reckless riding.
    • Complete safety training and refresher courses.
  3. Highlighting the Importance of Visibility
    • Motorcycles are smaller and less visible than cars, so both riders and drivers should take extra precautions.
    • Riders are encouraged to wear bright or reflective clothing.
  4. Reducing Motorcycle Accidents and Fatalities
    • The campaign aims to educate both riders and drivers to prevent collisions, which are often caused by lack of awareness or failure to yield.

Why May?

May is considered the start of the peak riding season, as warmer weather brings more motorcycles onto the roads. It’s the perfect time to remind everyone about motorcycle safety before summer traffic increases.
